10's, though, all around- Gibsons and Fenders. I thought so highly of this neck radius even on basses, that when I was looking for a new bass I measured my G&L L1000 and found it had that radius, which lead me to get the Stingray Classic and not the current Stingray:Īnd I just recently went from using. I'm a huge fan of the vintage radius/narrow fret Fenders, in fact I have that on these guitars, my '62 AVRI Telecaster:Īnd my AVRI Jazzmaster and Japanese made Mustang (not the Jazz bass, though): Maybe a slightly thicker neck, but not sure if I want to go w/ a ball bat neck again like I had done in previous years. I may end up going with a 10-16" compound radius, but the other key elements (small frets, low action, 1 5/8" nut width, little-to-no neck relief) will definitely stay the same. I'm looking at another possible guitar build but not sure if I want to incorporate all of these items in the new build. I'm getting more content with my own setup and tend to have less of that "grass is greener" tendency anymore. I used to have a bad habit of comparing my guitars to my friends' guitars and saying to myself "man, I wish my guitars were set up that way" and then I try it and it doesn't work for me. Sure it's not as bendy and loose feeling as my friend's Charvels (with 9's, 12" radius, low action and 6100 frets on them) but he's not playing my guitars and I'm not playing his, so the point is moot.
#ACTION STRINGS 1.5 FULL#
Oddly enough, I can do as much bending (1/2 step, maybe full step) or other fancy stuff (fast picking or tapping) as I need to with this setup. I hate hearing the strings be out of tune, whether from overbending or pressing down too hard.Īnybody else dig the low action, heavy strings, vintage frets & radius setup? But for me, I'm realizing that a solid setup that allows me to play riffs and more rhythm oriented stuff works best. I realize that bends are usually a little more out of control and over the top with 9's and 8's (as they should be. between a thin neck and a medium thicknessĪnd usually tuned to Eb, but tuned to A440 works just as well. 1 5/8" nut width with very low action at the first fret.heavy strings (11-49, currently D'Addario).I've come to realize that I like the following things on my strat: Well, after continuing to try different string gauges, various settings of my strat's action, etc.
